Solfatara examines the relationship of identity to place, and the emotional dislocation that occurs with environmental disruption. The work is comprised of a series of images depicting an abstract liminal terrain, each captured at an indecipherable scale. The images are almost Impressionistic—soothing pastels, open compositions, and ‘brush-strokes’ suggest a sense of calm and safety. In reality, the images depict a toxic earthscape: a poisonous environment incapable of supporting anything but the most extreme forms of microbial life. The resulting expressions act as an analogy, considering notions of life and death as symbiotic and attempting to engage with the fundamental feelings of loss that occur when familiar fades into unrecognizable.
